The level of development of society is determined by what conditions it creates for people who have violated the law. According to studies, the most advanced in this matter is the Scandinavian region, and superpowers (USA, Russia, China) occupy the last places in the ranking. This is due to the fact that the former believe that a stumbled person is no worse than others, and the latter, on the contrary, are sure that the offender must not only be punished, but also humiliated.
However, statistics confirm the correctness of the humane attitude towards prisoners: in the United States, more than half of those who serve time are again in the dock under similar articles, and in Norway - only every fifth. No one wants to be in a crowded prison where prisoners live like animals. But in the world there are other correctional institutions in which luxurious conditions are created.

Visitors often perform at Justiz Zentrum Leoben with musical performances.
9. Vestre Fngsel (Copenhagen, Denmark)
The oldest prison in Denmark, where criminals serving sentences of at least 5 years are serving their sentences. Vestre is a gated establishment with fencing and bars appropriate for status. But the uniform here is worn only by specially guarded three-year-old security personnel, the third part of which is women. The prisoners are paid a daily allowance (about 7 euros), and those who want to earn money are given work with an hourly pay (10 - 35 Danish kroner). For those who want to get a secondary education, special training programs are provided here. In addition to the gym, library and medical center, there is a store on the territory where you can buy everything except alcoholic beverages.
8. Gelsenkirchen (Gelsenkirchen, Germany)
Gelsenkirchen, built less than two decades ago, is designed to simultaneously hold a large number of prisoners (more than 500) of both sexes. But the conditions for men and women are somewhat different: the former can attend language and computer courses, and the latter are allowed walks with a warden outside the prison. Among all German correctional institutions, it is Gelsenkirchen that boasts the lowest percentage of repeat offenders. Such success is explained by the vast staff of social workers, psychologists, chaplains, whose work is aimed at the early adaptation of stumbled people to the outside world after leaving prison.
7. Viru (Johvi, Estonia)
Estonia inherited Viru (Johvi) from the USSR, but during independence, the country's prison service did everything to make over 1,000 prisoners feel comfortable there. Despite the fact that there are both criminals already sentenced to prison and people under investigation. Even students living in hostels can envy the conditions created in Vira. Clean double cameras with all amenities, a gym, a chapel, a comprehensive school, a gymnasium for adults, workshops - Viru always has something to do in order to pass the time. A youth department has been opened in the prison, where imperfect offenders are sent. For exemplary behavior, prisoners are granted a three-week vacation.
6. Bastoey (Bastoy Island, Norway)
Bastoey (Norway) is the only prison in the world that provides its electricity needs with the help of solar panels. There is almost no security - 20 prisoners have one warden, and prisoners have the right to move freely throughout the territory, including relaxing on the beach. The detainees themselves call this place an island of hope and while away time, growing vegetables, caring for animals on the farm or working in a bicycle repair shop. To maintain environmental cleanliness, all waste is sorted and processed on site. Prisoners spend their leisure time sunbathing on the sea coast, riding horses, playing tennis or fishing.
5. Cereso Chetumal (Chetumal, Mexico)
Mexico has never been particularly humane to people who break the law. But, Chetumal is, perhaps, the only attempt of the administration to create acceptable conditions for prisoners in the correctional institution. Thanks to non-standard management decisions, for example, resolving conflicts through boxing fights, the number of regime violations has decreased. Although Cereso Chetumal is designed to serve the sentence of malicious criminals - killers, robbers, drug dealers. Prisoners spend most of their time making various products for local stores. The income received allowed to supplement the cameras with modern household appliances.
4. Halden Fengsel (Halden, Norway)
Norwegian Halden is one of the most comfortable prisons located in a pine forest. The conditions for staying here are sometimes better than in the wild - spacious cameras with modern furniture, TVs, a shower, works of art on the walls. For those to whom relatives come, a separate house is equipped, equipped with everything necessary. Prisoners of Halden Fengsel spend their leisure time on the territory of the cultural center, where there is a library, a winter garden, a recording studio, and classes for training. Everyone can finish cooking classes here. Halden was originally intended for Norway’s most dangerous criminals, but executives say the prison system should focus on human rights.
3. Aranjuez (Aranjuez, Spain)
Prison Aranjuez (Spain) has a special approach to criminals who have small children. The most comfortable conditions have been created for such prisoners: family cells with children's furniture, a bathroom and walls decorated with cartoon characters. Open access to the playground. This is done so as not to injure the psyche of little Spaniards whose parents are serving their sentences. However, the stay of prisoners in the family unit is allowed only until the child reaches the age of three, after which the parents are sent to regular cells, and the children are transferred to the care of relatives.
2. Butner Federal Prison (North Carolina, USA)
Despite the repressiveness of the American penitentiary service, the comfortable Butner correctional complex is distinguished by its loyalty to people who have committed no serious crimes. And if not for the specific fence, the prison could be confused with an ordinary campus. It is known that in addition to the usual amenities, Butner Federal Prison cameras are equipped with cable TV, and about $ 3 is spent every day on the power of each prisoner. And here the best systems of medical and psychological rehabilitation are practiced in the country. The prison is intended for the simultaneous detention of 3,500 male prisoners.
1. San Pedro (La Paz, Bolivia)
A distinctive feature of San Pedro (La Paz, Bolivia) is the absence of prison cells and security. But the conditions of stay here can hardly be called comfortable: massive walls, gloomy atmosphere, difficult psychological atmosphere. And surprisingly, every prisoner is obliged to pay for his stay in prison from his own pocket. Therefore, prosperous prisoners can provide themselves with a luxurious room with amenities, good food, and a polite attitude. And the poor will get bare walls, disgustingly cooked food, an unfriendly attitude from the staff. The main entertainment in San Pedro is football matches of local teams.
